With the emergence of Foursquare, Sitges has been inundated with new mayors & we have created a guide to help.
HOW TO ADDRESS THE MAYOR
‘Ladies and gentlemen, pray be upstanding to receive The Worshipful The Mayor and Mayoress/guest’ (when there is a male Mayor) and escort/guest (when there is a female Mayor).
During a function, the Mayor and Mayoress are not left unescorted.
- Speaking directly to:
- Male Mayor: Mr Mayor
- Female Mayor: Madam Mayor
- Mayoress accompanying Male Mayor: Madam Mayoress
- Anyone accompanying Female Mayor: Title & name only e.g. ‘Mr Brown’ or ‘Mrs Smith’
- Accompanying Guest: As above
- Speaking about or referring to:
- “The Worshipful the Mayor” initially (then ‘The Mayor’)
- Formal speech:
- ‘Mr Mayor (or Madam Mayor), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen…’
- Letters & envelopes:
The Worshipful the Mayor of…
In public the Mayor is never called by his/her forename.
TABLE SEATING
The Mayor is seated on the immediate right hand of the host or chairman.
AT THE END OF AN EVENT
It is usual for the Mayor to be escorted out before the other guests depart.
The Mayor of a location is the First Citizen and ex officio representative within that
part of the Sovereign.
Usually the Mayor will arrive by the Mayoral Car or on shanks’s pony
If people are seated (though this does not necessarily apply) it is usual for the host to arrange for the Mayor to be announced upon entering the venue, so that those present may stand to acknowledge the status of the mayoralty.
